Fort may have disappeared in the 1860s, but its stories continue to live in the streets of South Mumbai.
The Bazaar Gate Walk explores the former Bombay Fort district and the neighbourhood surrounding one of its three principal gateways. Once located near the present-day General Post Office, Bazaar Gate connected a fortified colonial settlement to the busy native town beyond its walls.
As we walk through these historic lanes, we uncover the communities that shaped the area—including Parsis, Bohras, Shroffs and Modis. Each trading community created its own neighbourhood, places of worship and social institutions.
